  • All AGS Driving School Pupils will have free access to Theory Test Pro, where you can practice everything required to pass your Theory Test.

According to national survey data, more than one in five new drivers admitted to having an accident in their first year of driving. Based on the driving test pass rate in the UK between April 2016 and March 2017, this equates to an estimated 176,000 new drivers being involved in an accident in the same timeframe.

This is why I will teach you how to drive safely, not just pass the test. By becoming a safe and courteous driver you will reduce your chances of being involved in an accident which will in turn keep your insurance costs down.

Being able to drive gives you the freedom and independence to be able to put your keys in the ignition and go anywhere you choose.

Learning to drive can be a daunting experience, the DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional driving lessons and a further 22 hours of private practice to learn to drive. However, every driver is an individual and learn at different speeds so some people will need less time whilst others will need more. The aim is to be a safe confident driver before going for your test which will then mean you are comfortable to be out on the road alone after the test.

All lessons are delivered on a 1 to 1 basis, focusing on your needs and made to be a relaxed, enjoyable experience.

A structured syllabus is followed which is shown in the Total Drive app and your progress is also shown so you can understand what you have achieved and what comes next.

It was wonderful taking classes from Andy. I personally like how he stay calm when I am making mistake. And then discuss the mistake and then take me through the same route to fix the mistake right away. His schedule was also perfectly aligned with my duty schedule. Good thing about the car is that you can press brake harder to put the hand breake. Which is quite a good feature when moving off from slope. His rates were also affordable to me. 👌🏻 10/10 recommended!🎉🎉

I had the pleasure of learning to drive with Andy, and I can confidently say that it was an incredibly positive experience from start to finish. No matter how many mistakes I made, he never once showed any signs of frustration or impatience. Instead, he remained calm and supportive, offering guidance and encouragement every step of the way. What truly sets Andy apart is his unwavering dedication to his students. One of the things I appreciated most about Andy's teaching style is his student-centred approach. He listened to my feedback and tailored the lessons to focus on areas where I felt needed improvement. This allowed me to take an active role in my learning process, empowering me to identify my own strengths and weaknesses. Even during moments of self-doubt, Andy was always there to offer words of encouragement and motivation. I can't thank Andy enough for all that he's done for me, and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a patient, dedicated, and supportive driving instructor. Andy truly is the best in the business!

Before you can book your practical driving test you will need to have passed your Theory test.

You can do your theory test from the age of 17 onwards. You must have a provisional licence to take the test.

The theory test itself is made of two parts. The first part consists of 50 multiple-choice questions which tests your knowledge of driving practices. The second part is a video-based hazard perception test which assesses your ability to respond to hazardous situations on the road.

Both parts are taken on the same day, you will need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. If you fail one part and pass the other, you will fail the whole test and will need to take both parts again. The driving theory test pass mark is 43/50 for the multiple-choice test and 44/75 for the hazard perception test.

You can use books and software to revise for the theory test and take practice tests.

The multiple-choice questions in the theory test are based on 3 books found at the following links:

What happens during the test?

The driving test consists of the following five (5) parts:

1. The eyesight check

The examiner will check that your eyesight is good enough to drive. Don’t forget your glasses if you need them!

You’ll be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres away, which is roughly the length of 5 cars. If you can’t read the plate you’ve failed the test and it ends there.

2. ‘Show me, Tell me’ safety questions

You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions by the examiner, known as ‘show me, tell me’. This is to show you know how to perform basic safety checks.

The ‘tell me’ question will require you to explain how you’d carry out a certain activity - for example, how to open the bonnet and check there’s sufficient oil in the engine, or where to find the recommended tyre pressures, and how to check the pressure. There are 14 possible ‘tell me’ questions.

For the ‘show me’ question you'll need to demonstrate how to carry out a certain activity - for example, wash and clean the rear windscreen, or sound the horn. There are 7 possible ‘show me questions’.

3. General driving ability

The examiner will give you direct you, much the same as you’ll be used to from your lessons.

You will be asked to pull over at least 3 times and perform the following:

  • Pull over in a safe, legal place selected by you.
  • Angled start, pull away from behind a parked car.
  • Pull away on a hill.
  • Perform an emergency stop - only 1 in 3 tests will feature this.
There are some things you won’t be expected to do on your test, such as motorway driving.

4. Reversing the vehicle

To test your reversing ability, the examiner will ask you to do one of these:

  • Reverse Park into a parking bay. You’ll be asked to reverse in and drive out.
  • Forward Park into a parking bay. You’ll be asked to drive in and reverse out.
  • Parallel park. This will be performed at the side of the road by at least one parked car.
  • Reverse for around two car lengths. For this, you will be asked to pull up on the right-hand side of the road. Once you’ve completed the manoeuvre, you’ll be asked to rejoin the traffic.

5. Independent driving

This section of the test is to show you can follow directions from a sat nav, traffic signs, or both - rather than from the examiner. If you’re following a sat nav, the examiner will set it up for you. Although the examiner won’t ask you anything during this part of the test, you can ask them questions.

There are times the examiner might step in, for example, if you take a wrong turn or you can’t read an obstructed sign. If the examiner has to give directions, don’t interpret this as having failed or being marked down. Going off-route won’t necessarily affect your test result.
